What is Neem Oil?
Neem oil is a natural vegetable oil pressed from the fruits and seeds of the neem tree (Azadirachta indica), an evergreen native to India and Southeast Asia. It has been used for centuries in agriculture, cosmetics, and traditional medicine.
Its power comes from a compound called azadirachtin, which acts as a natural pesticide, repellent, and growth disruptor. It’s a cornerstone of organic gardening due to its effectiveness and low toxicity to beneficial insects when used correctly.
Benefits of Neem Oil for Plants
Neem oil is a multi-tool for gardeners. Its primary benefits are:
- Broad-Spectrum Insecticide: Kills or repels a wide array of common garden pests.
- Fungicide: Helps prevent and control various fungal diseases.
- Miticide: Effective against spider mites.
- Systemic Properties: When applied as a soil drench, plants can absorb neem oil, making their sap toxic to sucking and chewing insects without harming beneficial pollinators.
- Safe for Beneficial Insects: When sprayed properly (i.e., at dawn or dusk when pollinators aren’t active), it has minimal impact on bees, ladybugs, and other beneficials because it must be ingested to work. It also breaks down quickly.
- Organic and Biodegradable: It’s an approved organic treatment that doesn’t leave long-lasting harmful residues in the soil or environment.
