Chamomile Essential Oil: An Eastern Herb of Peace, Called the “Apple of the Earth” in the West

In traditional Chinese culture, the chrysanthemum has long been regarded as the “herb of longevity” and the “plant of purity.” The Shennong Bencao Jing (The Classic of Materia Medica) lists chrysanthemum as a top-grade herb, stating that “taking it for a long time benefits the flow of qi and blood, lightens the body, and resists aging.” And there is a small white flower from the same botanical family as the chrysanthemum, with smaller blossoms and a fresh, apple-like sweetness – chamomile. Although it originated in the West, its nature and effects are remarkably similar to the “sweet chrysanthemum” and “wild chrysanthemum” described by ancient Chinese writers: clearing heat, calming the mind, and moisturizing the skin.

Chamomile essential oil, extracted from the flowers through steam distillation, carries a gentle sweetness and warmth, a blend of herbal and fruity notes that in Eastern aesthetics is described as “peaceful.” It is neither an intense, piercing medicinal scent nor a cloying, overly sweet floral fragrance. It is a kind of “delicate yet not thin, sweet yet not greasy” aroma – one sniff, and you feel as if you are in the autumn of Jiangnan, steeping a cup of chrysanthemum tea, with wisps of steam rising, and your heart quietly settling down.

What is it? The “Herb of Peace” understood by both East and West

Although the ancient Chinese did not distill essential oils, they very early on learned to use chrysanthemum and wild chrysanthemum in decoctions to wash the face, rinse the eyes, and apply to red, swollen skin. The traditional Western benefits of chamomile – anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic, and soothing – are strikingly similar to the understanding of chrysanthemum-family plants in traditional Chinese medicine. Their core components include chamazulene and alpha-bisabolol. These natural molecules give chamomile essential oil three key properties: clearing heat (anti-inflammatory), calming the mind (soothing), and moisturizing dryness (hydrating).

If described in the language of Chinese aesthetics, its aroma has layers: the top note is a fresh, moist, apple-like sweetness, like the dew of early autumn mornings; the middle note carries the warm scent of dried hay, like a pillow stuffed with sun-dried chrysanthemum flowers; the base note leaves a subtle, elegant, sweet-herbal aftertaste that lingers for a long time.

Three main strengths: Clear, Calm, Moisturize

1. Clear: Clearing “heat toxicity” from the skin

In traditional Chinese medicine, skin redness, itching, eczema, and acne are often associated with “heat in the blood” and “damp toxicity.” Chamomile essential oil is cool in nature and can clear heat from the skin. For seasonal allergies, post-sun exposure redness, or the “red face” caused by cosmetic irritation, applying diluted chamomile essential oil is like applying a cooling herbal tea to the skin.

2. Calm: Calming a restless mind

The fragrance of chamomile essential oil is sweet, gentle, and descending in nature, helping to guide the “rising fire” back down. Add 3 drops of chamomile essential oil to a diffuser before sleep, or put 1 drop on a tissue near your pillow. That gentle scent can help pull back your wandering thoughts. The ancients used chrysanthemum-stuffed pillows; today, we diffuse chamomile essential oil – the principle is the same: using light, clear aromas to settle the mind.

3. Moisturize: Moisturizing dry skin

Chamomile essential oil helps the skin lock in moisture while relieving the tightness and itching caused by dryness. Add 1 drop of chamomile essential oil to your face cream or lotion, and your skin will become soft, supple, and radiant.

One last thought:

Chamomile essential oil is not the exclusive domain of “imported” goods. Its nature – clear but not cold, moisturizing but not greasy, calming but not heavy – is something that feels deeply familiar. It is like a gentle, top-grade Chinese herb – not aggressive, not intense, yet when your skin is irritated, your mind is in turmoil, or your child is crying inconsolably, it will quietly and steadily support you.
