Health Benefits of Oil of Oregano

Oil of oregano, also known as oregano oil or oregano extract, is extracted from various parts of the oregano plant. The oil may have benefits like treating infections and improving gut health. What oil of oregano is said to be good for is based on its antioxidant, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory properties.

Oregano, or Origanum vulgare, is an herb from the mint family that’s native to Europe, Asia, and the Mediterranean. It’s commonly used to add flavor to Italian and Mexican dishes.

It’s important to note that most research has been conducted in test tubes or animals. More research is needed to know if these benefits apply to humans. Talk to a healthcare provider about when and how to use oil of oregano, including how much oil to take for a fungal infection before using it.

Helps Improve Respiratory Function

Oregano has long been used in traditional medicine to treat asthma, coughing, and bronchitis.3 Carvacrol supplements may improve inflammation, lung function, and respiratory symptoms in people with lung damage and asthma.

Oil of oregano is a source of this antioxidant. More research is necessary to determine whether it can produce the same effects.

Is Rich in Antioxidants
Oregano, in both fresh and dry form, has potent antioxidant properties. Antioxidants are substances that can stabilize free radicals. These harmful compounds cause cell damage.

Oregano oil is particularly rich in the antioxidants carvacrol, thymol, and octacosanol. A test-tube study published in 2016 found that treating cells with oregano extract before exposing them to hydrogen peroxide counteracted oxidative stress.

Oxidative stress is a condition that occurs when there are too many unstable free radicals in the body and not enough antioxidants. Prolonged oxidative stress can lead to aging and chronic inflammation.

May Reduce Inflammation
Both oil of oregano and oregano essential oil have been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties. A study published in 2018 found that applying oregano extract topically significantly reduced inflammation in rats. This inflammation was caused by Propionibacterium acnes, a bacteria that can cause acne.

Another study published in 2021 found that carvacrol reduced inflammation and cholesterol levels in mice fed a high-fat diet.19 Research on human skin cells has shown that oregano essential oil may fight inflammation, promote wound healing, and support the immune system. This oil might even protect against cancer.

It’s important to note that oregano essential oil may have a toxic effect on some cells. Human studies are needed before it can be routinely recommended to reduce inflammation.
