Neem oil doesn’t mix well with water, so it requires an emulsifier.
Basic Recipe:
- 1 Gallon of Water (warm water helps it mix better)
- 1-2 Teaspoons of Cold-Pressed Neem Oil (start with 1 tsp for prevention, 2 tsp for active problems)
- 1 Teaspoon of Mild Liquid Soap (e.g., Castile soap) - This is crucial. The soap acts as an emulsifier to mix the oil and water. Avoid harsh detergents.
Instructions:
- Pour the warm water into your sprayer.
- Add the soap and gently swirl to dissolve.
- Add the neem oil and shake vigorously to emulsify. The mixture should look milky.
- Use immediately or within a few hours, as the mixture will break down. Shake the sprayer frequently during application to keep it mixed.
Application Tips:
- Test First: Always test the spray on a small, inconspicuous part of the plant and wait 24 hours to check for phytotoxicity (leaf burn).
- Timing is Key: Spray early in the morning or late in the evening. This prevents the sun from burning the oil-coated leaves and avoids harming beneficial pollinators like bees.
- Thorough Coverage: Spray both the top and bottom of all leaves until they are dripping. Pests and fungi often hide on the undersides.
- Consistency: For active infestations, apply every 7-14 days until the problem is under control. For prevention, apply every 14-21 days.
- Re-mix: Shake the spray bottle every few minutes during use to keep the oil suspended.
