How to Make and Use Neem Oil Spray

Neem oil doesn’t mix well with water, so it requires an emulsifier.

Basic Recipe:

  1. 1 Gallon of Water (warm water helps it mix better)
  2. 1-2 Teaspoons of Cold-Pressed Neem Oil (start with 1 tsp for prevention, 2 tsp for active problems)
  3. 1 Teaspoon of Mild Liquid Soap (e.g., Castile soap) - This is crucial. The soap acts as an emulsifier to mix the oil and water. Avoid harsh detergents.

Instructions:

  1. Pour the warm water into your sprayer.
  2. Add the soap and gently swirl to dissolve.
  3. Add the neem oil and shake vigorously to emulsify. The mixture should look milky.
  4. Use immediately or within a few hours, as the mixture will break down. Shake the sprayer frequently during application to keep it mixed.

Application Tips:

  • Test First: Always test the spray on a small, inconspicuous part of the plant and wait 24 hours to check for phytotoxicity (leaf burn).
  • Timing is Key: Spray early in the morning or late in the evening. This prevents the sun from burning the oil-coated leaves and avoids harming beneficial pollinators like bees.
  • Thorough Coverage: Spray both the top and bottom of all leaves until they are dripping. Pests and fungi often hide on the undersides.
  • Consistency: For active infestations, apply every 7-14 days until the problem is under control. For prevention, apply every 14-21 days.
  • Re-mix: Shake the spray bottle every few minutes during use to keep the oil suspended.
