Pure Cherry Blossom Essential Oil for Making Candles and Soaps
Cherry Blossom oil, specifically from the Japanese Cherry Blossom or Sakura (Prunus serrulata), is a fragrant oil cherished almost exclusively for its exquisite, delicate, and emotionally evocative scent. Unlike oils like lavender or tea tree, it is not a true essential oil obtained through steam distillation.
This is because the cherry blossom flower is far too delicate and has an extremely low yield of volatile aromatic compounds, making steam distillation impractical and economically unviable.
Instead, “Cherry Blossom Oil” is typically one of two things:
- A Fragrance Oil or Absolute: Most commonly, it is a fragrance oil—a synthetic recreation of the cherry blossom scent. Sometimes, it can be an absolute created through solvent extraction, but this is very rare, expensive, and often still blended with synthetics to stabilize the fragile aroma.
- An Infused Oil (Sakura Oil): In Japan, a traditional product known as Sakura Oil is made by infusing the salt-pickled leaves and flowers of the cherry blossom in a carrier oil (like jojoba or rice bran oil). This captures the subtle fragrance and some of the plant’s beneficial properties for skincare.
