The Australian tea tree is a plant of the Myrtaceae family. It grows in coastal marshlands in tropical to subtropical regions. The tree has an upright, conical shape, with slender, feather-like leaves that are linear and arranged alternately. Young leaves are yellowish-green, turning bright green as they mature. The terminal inflorescence is a white, bottlebrush-like flower, which can also bloom in yellow or purple. The plant reaches a height of about 3 to 7 meters and grows quickly. Although the name literally translates to “tea tree,” it is not the source of black tea or any other type of tea. The origin of its name is tied to a legend from the place where it was discovered. It is said that there was a lake surrounded by these trees. Because the components of the trees seeped into the water, the lake took on a deep reddish-brown color, like black tea. The local people thus called the trees growing around it “tea trees.” Another legend tells that Indigenous women, during childbirth, postpartum recovery, or when experiencing gynecological issues, would immerse themselves in the reddish-brown waters of this lake for healing. For this reason, the tea tree has long been regarded as a plant that nurtures and protects women.
