Frankincense Essential Oil

Frankincense essential oil, steam-distilled from the resin of Boswellia trees, is gaining renewed attention for three practical applications: easing muscle tension through massage, supporting skin appearance, and creating a grounding atmosphere through diffusion. Its appeal lies less in novelty than in versatility — a single bottle can move between a massage blend, a facial serum, and a diffuser without losing its quiet, resinous character.

From Sacred Resin to Everyday Ritual
Frankincense, also called olibanum, is an aromatic resin harvested from trees of the Boswellia genus, including Boswellia sacra and Boswellia carterii. The resin has been burned as incense and used in spiritual ceremonies for thousands of years. To produce the essential oil, the hardened resin — often described as golden “tears” — is steam-distilled into a concentrated aromatic liquid.

In modern self-care, that concentrated oil is most often encountered in three formats: diluted for massage, blended into skincare, and diffused into the air. Each route of use comes with its own practical logic — and its own dilution rules.

Massage: Dilution Is the Starting Point
For massage, frankincense essential oil is valued for its ability to relax the body and mind while helping to soothe aching muscles. It is not applied neat. A typical adult blend uses approximately 5 drops of frankincense essential oil per 10 ml of carrier oil. Some aromatherapy suppliers recommend a slightly broader range — 4 to 6 drops per 20 ml of blending oil for massage or bath use. For adults using a base oil measured in tablespoons, up to 15 drops in 2 tablespoons of carrier oil is cited, with the amount reduced for children over two years old or adults with sensitive skin.

Carrier oils such as jojoba, almond, or grapeseed are commonly used to dilute the essential oil before it touches the skin. The massage blend can be worked into the skin with gentle circular motions until absorbed, avoiding the eyes and washing hands afterward.

Skincare: Small Amounts, Targeted Application
In skincare, frankincense oil is used for its reputed anti-aging and skin-conditioning properties. It is described in cosmetic contexts as helping to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, promote skin regeneration, and improve the look of acne, dry patches, and scars. Formulators often incorporate it into facial oils, serums, and moisturizers to help condition and rejuvenate the skin.

The key constraint is concentration. For facial skincare, a common guidance is up to 5 drops of frankincense essential oil per 30 ml of carrier oil or unscented lotion. A more conservative dilution framework places leave-on facial products for adults at 0.5% to 1% essential oil, which translates to roughly 3 to 6 drops per 30 ml of carrier for a facial oil. For everyday body care, a 2% dilution — about 10 to 12 drops per 30 ml — is a standard reference point.

Frankincense can be added to an existing moisturizer or blended into a simple facial serum with jojoba and a small amount of castor oil. Because the oil is concentrated, it should never be applied undiluted to the face or scalp.

Aromatherapy: A Diffuser Oil for Slowing Down
In diffusion, frankincense is used less for its skin benefits and more for its effect on atmosphere. Its deep, earthy, and slightly spicy aroma is commonly described as grounding, calming, and conducive to meditation or mindfulness. Aromatherapy references note that inhaling frankincense can encourage slower, deeper breathing and support a sense of emotional balance.

For diffuser use, the range is wide because diffuser sizes and room volumes vary. Some product guidance recommends 8 to 10 drops in a diffuser with water; other aromatherapy sources suggest 1 to 3 drops for adults in a diffuser or burner. A practical approach is to start with a small number of drops and adjust to the space. Frankincense blends well with sandalwood, patchouli, grapefruit, lemon, and Roman chamomile, making it easy to layer into a custom diffuser blend.
