Sweet Almond Oil
Sweet almond oil is a classic, emollient oil prized for its ability to soften, soothe, and repair the skin barrier. It’s considered a “fixed oil,” meaning it’s a stable, non-irritating base oil ideal for all skin types, especially dry and sensitive skin.
- Strengthens the Skin Barrier: It is rich in fatty acids that help restore and maintain the skin’s natural protective barrier (stratum corneum), preventing moisture loss and keeping out irritants.
- Calms Inflammation: The vitamin E in almond oil acts as a powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent, which can help reduce itching, swelling, and redness associated with conditions like eczema and psoriasis.
- Locks in Moisture: As an emollient, it fills the “cracks” between skin cells, creating a smooth surface. It also has occlusive properties, meaning it seals water into the skin without feeling as heavy as petrolatum jelly.
- May Reduce Signs of Aging: Studies suggest that topical application can help prevent structural damage from UV radiation, potentially lessening the signs of photoaging. It is also traditionally used to help reduce the appearance of scars and stretch marks.
Rosehip Oil
Rosehip oil is a dry, fast-absorbing oil extracted from the seeds of rose bushes. It is widely recognized for its ability to address signs of aging, hyperpigmentation, and acne scarring due to its high concentration of active vitamins and essential fatty acids.
- Potent Anti-Aging Effects: It is rich in vitamin A (a natural form of trans-retinoic acid), which stimulates collagen and elastin production to smooth fine lines and wrinkles. It also contains vitamin C, an antioxidant that protects from free radical damage and brightens the skin.
- Improves Acne and Scars: The high linoleic acid (omega-6) content helps regulate sebum production, preventing the thick, sticky oil that clogs pores. This makes it beneficial for inflammatory acne. The vitamin A content also helps with cell turnover to fade post-acne marks and hyperpigmentation.
- Calms Inflammation: It contains phenols and anthocyanins which have anti-inflammatory properties, helpful for calming redness and conditions like eczema.
Avocado Oil
Avocado oil is a heavier, deeply penetrating oil extracted from the fruit’s pulp. It is nutrient-dense and ideal for very dry, dehydrated, or mature skin that needs intensive nourishment.
- Deeply Moisturizing & Penetrating: Unlike many oils that sit on top of the skin, avocado oil is easily absorbed into the deeper layers. It contains oleic acid and unsaponifiables (like sterols) that improve the skin’s water retention capacity.
- Stimulates Collagen: It is rich in antioxidants like lutein and zeaxanthin, as well as vitamins A, D, and E. These compounds help stimulate collagen production, which delays skin aging, improves elasticity, and reduces the appearance of fine lines.
- Protects and Repairs: The antioxidants help protect the skin from sun damage and environmental stressors. It is highly emollient, making it effective for soothing peeling skin caused by eczema, sunburns, or cracks.
